IN CLASS WITH JO
I’m a cyclist, so by definition I have never considered myself a flexible person. I tried yoga a long time ago and it all felt like a bit of a joke. I was falling over the whole time, I couldn’t do anything the teacher was asking and the environment didn’t feel supportive. I showed up twice and just thought it wasn't for me.
The obvious result of coming to classes with Jo is that I’m more bendy and stretchy and strong, and I don’t feel nearly as old as I did before I started. I also feel like I’m achieving something; every time I show up she helps me unlock some part of my body that had never been spoken too before and I can make it do something. It gives you a sense of confidence and satisfaction that makes you wonder why other people don’t do this.
There isn’t one specific thing or feature I like about Jo’s classes, more so it’s the combination of everything that makes walking into the class feel just right. Your not hanging around in a pose for too long or too short a time, the instructions are clear, simple and insightful; it moves along at exactly the right pace. You throw in a whole bunch of knowledge and eagerness for everyone in the room to do their best and I think you have an environment that invites you to challenge yourself, to learn and explore the cool things your body and mind can do.

What did I find as a result of coming to sessions with Jo? Wow what didn’t I find! Jo is absolutely the teacher I searched for many times but didn't find! Jo’s endless enthusiasm and dedication for the practice of Yoga is just so inspiring and exciting, and as a result, my practice has quickly progressed with a real sense of knowledge and understanding.
To quote Jo “I don't even care if you don't make it to the final pose, but give 100% to whatever it is you are doing.” This comment alone has given me the confidence to try anything and overcome my own ‘insecurities’ of ‘where I should be’ and just BE. I don't worry what others are doing on their mat. I just give 100% to my own practice whatever that is at the time. This is one of the reasons I recommend Jo, as well as her insight, experience and knowledge to take anyone; beginner to advanced, and guide them to explore and deepen their own practice as well as the abundance of kindness and knowledge in which she listens and responds.
Jo has made me feel like I can put my complete faith and practice in her hands as my teacher but at the same time ask that I too take responsibility for my own practice.I have had many ‘Ah-ha’ moments in every single class and my recommendation to attend Jo is simple “if you really want to move stuff in your life, go to Jo." I stumbled into Bellarine Peninsula Yoga in February 2009. My first baby was 8 weeks old and had been born by cesarean. And although his birth was to become the gateway to profound healing in my life; initially I felt fractured into a zillion pieces after a physically traumatic process. I was attempting to exist completely outside my body so to speak. There really aren't words to describe the incredible impact that Jo's skillful teaching had then and continues to have for me now. I've taken two terms off yoga in 9 years: when I birthed my 2nd and 3rd children. Both born gently at home in water. I practiced up until the day of each birth.
I've had of the honour of witnessing Jo's teaching go from strength to strength over the years and I've learned so much but the absolute treasure for me has been discovering the Home Practice Program. My practice feels like it is my own now. The learning I experience from it on every level blows my mind, keeps me steady and moves me closer to being in my body because the wisdom of the body is fact, as they say. Jo's intelligent, generous, vulnerable and brave teaching of every aspect of Iyengar Yoga is invaluable . My yoga practice is the consistent steadying compass pointer in a wonderfully wacky and often overstimulating world. Ten million thank yous Jo! Kierstan - Portarlington
Thanks Jo for another amazing class last night. Who would of thought I could achieve Pincha mayurasana of some sort 😊. My shoulder blades felt amazing this morning, like they where in the right place, my pelvic area somewhat compact, and my shoulders like they were heading to "pencils in the wall" . I love working on the ropes, they seem to get me and my bits going in the right direction.
In my headstand I feel I waiver on the left shoulder and is "tamasic" on the right. I will keep going " room to room " to tidy up the mess and work to stay in the Midline more with all poses.
I feel I am heading in the right direction. Carol - St. Leonards
